What is a minitruck?
Looking at one of these vehicles, your first thought is that is aptly name as it is just a smaller version of a pick up truck. Mini trucks (also called Kei trucks) have been made in Japan since the 1960’s. They are generally 4WD, right-hand drive, manual transmission and used for transportation in Japan. Kei means “light weight” in Japanese. These trucks are designed for the toughest conditions in the Japanese landscape, capable of hauling loads on rough roads. All mini trucks some standard with heater, headlights, turn signals, seat belts, windshield wipers and brake lights. Many also come with power steering, locking differentials, axle differentials, air conditioning and dump beds. Top speed is around 60 mph (some turbo-charged trucks can reach 80 mph), but they are imported from Japan with a metal plate welded on the gear-shift limiting the vehicle to only first gear or reverse. With that plate in place, the truck can only go 25 mph. The plates are generally only tack welded.
